The lifetime of irregular galactic interarm structures called spurs is determined by means of stellar dynamical calculations. The spurs are assumed to be material features built up by stochastic star formation processes and are represented by stars moving under the influence of the galactic gravitational field with a density-wave potential. It is found that spurs eventually merge with the preceding spiral arms, have lifetimes of about 180 million yr, and behave similarly in galaxies of different morphologies. The lifetimes obtained are compared with the characteristic time scales given by spiral density-wave theory, by stochastic spiral-arm models, and by analytical calculations using the tidal-compression-shock method.
