First to report the discovery of this 'probable' new comet was Toru Kobayashi from near Fukui, Japan on 1975 July 2. It was discovered independently by Douglas Berger, Union City, California on July 5 and Denis Milon, Mount Washburn, Wyoming on July 7. Milon reported the new comet as 7.5 magnitude, diffuse with condensation, coma diameter 10( and no tail, though photographs obtained at the Lick Observatory on July 5 with the 51cm double astrograph showed a short tail less than 1° long. Kobayashi, Berger and Milon were the first to have their discoveries notified to the International Astronomical Union's Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams (CBAT) and following the usual practice, the comet carries their names. But in all CBAT Director Brian G. Marsden received notice of as many as 50 independent discoveries.
