The most nebulous aspect of the Soviet space program has for many years been the development of a manned lunar landing spacecraft and launch vehicle. Since reports began to arrive in the West in the early 1970s, three launch failures have been identified for a booster of the Apollo/Saturn 5 payload class, designated G-1-e according to the Sheldon classification system. An analysis is undertaken of the information that has been obtained to date on this launch vehicle, its launch facility, and the lunar landing and exploration program they were intended to support.
