In spontaneous compactification of eleven-dimensional Kaluza-Klein theories of supergravity, the purely four-dimensional component of a rank-three tensor field is an auxiliary field expressed nonlocally in terms of other independent fields. A general prescription is presented to eliminate the auxiliary field from the action, obtaining a classical effective potential for fluctuations around a solution of the theory. This prescription is applied to some fluctation modes around the solutions of Freund and Rubin (1980) and Englert (1982).
