The propagation of interplanetary-magnetic-field fluctuations (IMFFs) across the near-ecliptic magnetosheath of the earth is investigated theoretically using an MHD model. The results are presented graphically and compared with satellite observations of IMFF spatial distributions. It is found that the intensity and anisotropy of IMFFs are amplified in the magnetosheath region and exhibit dawn-dusk asymmetry (increasing with decreasing IMFF intensity) when the IMF is in the ecliptic plane, with a general strong dependence of observed-effect distribution on IMF direction. In particular, a southward turn of the IMF is associated with a shift of the maximum-fluctuation region to the north-polar zone and increasing north-south asymmetry, which peaks when the IMF-ecliptic angle is 45 deg.
