Cassegrain spectra of the jet and the nebulosities associated with the molecular outflow region in L1551 have been used to derive radial velocities, electron densities, and extinction. The observed emission-line spectra show the characteristic features of a shock-excited gas. In the jet emanating from IRS 5, radial velocities up to -210 km/s and a mean electron density of 1000/cu cm are found. Away from the jet the average velocities are smaller. The extinction deduced from the H-alpha/H-beta ratio is rather low with values of A(v) less than 3 mag. On the other hand, an obscuration of A(v) greater than about 20 mag is derived for IRS 5 which appears to be a very young premain-sequence star of about 1 solar mass. The momentum supply rate due to the jet amounts only to about 1 percent of what is needed to drive the molecular gas.
