A 2.2 x 3.3-arcmin field in the eastern part of the Virgo Cluster giant elliptical M87 = NGC 4486 was observed with a CCD detector for 60 minutes on each of five nights. The limiting magnitude of these observations was B of about 25.5. Two novae were discovered: the first of these reached B(max) of less than about 24.9 on, or before, February 24, 1984 UT, whereas the second attained B(max) of less than about 24.1 on, or slightly after, February 28, 1984 UT. These are believed to be the faintest variable stars ever observed. The present observations indicate that the distance modulus of M87 lies in the range between 30.4 and 32.4.
