The aim of these lectures is to provide some guidelines focused on the description and forecasting of activity phenomena occurring on the Sun in the attempt to give an overview of such a quite broad and complex phenomenological scenario. To balance the richness of the subject with space constraints, we preferred a schematic approach by limiting the level of detail and, to give easy mnemonic references to the reader, the information is summarized in tables and schemes wherever possible. The subject is organized as follows. A brief overview of the Sun as a star is given in Section 2. Solar activity is characterized in Section 3 by a synopsis of solar activity phenomena (Section 3.1) and their numerical descriptors (Section 3.2). An introduction to Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) techniques in forecasting is given in Section 4. The conclusions are drawn in Section 5.
