The evolution of the orbit of comet P/Crommelin is investigated over a period of 11 centuries. It is shown that the present orbit is very stable and must have existed for still longer periods of time. A capture by a giant planet of a comet coming from the Oort cloud seems an unlikely mechanism for explaining the presently observed orbit of the comet. It is assumed that the comet was once very active, very bright, and that the action of non-gravitational forces on its nucleus decreased its aphelion distance from a very large value to its present value of about 18 AU. During the course of this long evolutionary process, the comet lost considerable amounts of dust and volatile material. The nucleus of comet Crommelin has probably today a radius of at least 1.5 km and only a small fraction of its surface is ice/snow covered.
