Multifilter linear polarization observations of 16 northern symbiotic stars are presented. Four stars, namely AS338, HM Sge, V1016 Cyg, and R Aqr, are shown to possess intrinsic polarization, typically between a few tenths of a percent and several percent. In the remaining stars an intrinsic component could not be distinguished from the larger interstellar polarization. The polarization mechanism in symbiotic stars is suggested to be the light scattering by small dust grains, situated in the extended atmospheres of the late-type primaries and the circumstellar nebulae. A gradual transition from S-type (less circumstellar dust) to D-type (more circumstellar dust) symbiotic stars is inferred to exist. A correlation is suggested between the intrinsic polarization and the spectral type of the late-type star, as well as between the intrinsic polarization and the IR-type (S or D).
