The authors consider the "infrared echo" of the optical variability of the cepheid variable RS Puppis, that arises from the variable heating of the dust grains in its reflection nebulosity. Detailed far infrared observations of the nebulosity can provide a valuable determination of the distance of RS Puppis, independent of interstellar extinction and of the scattering function for the grains. Near infrared observations of RS Puppis, obtained at the South African Astronomical Observatory, are presented in an appendix.
