Close binaries of compact stars (white dwarf or neutron stars) lose angular momentum due to the emission of gravitational radiation. This process eventually leads to the coalescence of the system where the less massive component is tidally destroyed. The merged object is made of a compact core in uniform rotation surrounded by a thick, differentially rotating disk. The subsequent evolution of the system is uncertain but may produce a gamma-ray burst (in the case of merging neutron stars), a type Ia supernova or a ``magnetar'' (in the case of merging white dwarfs).
