The preliminary results of our ongoing NIR survey of the variable red giants in the Large Magellanic Cloud are presented. In the observed color-magnitude diagram (J-Ks,Ks) and the stellar Ks magnitude distribution, the tip of the first giant branch (TRGB, Ks ~ 12.3 Nikolaev & Weinberg 2000) is clearly seen. Apart from the genuine AGB variables, we found many variable stars that populate just below the TRGB. From this result, we infer that most, if not all, of them are RGB variables.
