The interferometers being planned for future installation in LIGO to form an "Advanced LIGO" system should allow an order of magnitude increase in detector strain sensitivity, giving the opportunity to encompass a significantly wider range of astrophysical sources. I will discuss the research and technology being developed across the LIGO Scientific Collaboration which will make this possible, including contributions from European partners in the GEO collaboration.
