If, in the early universe, the dark matter is a cold, collionless, continuous fluid, then the phase space density is nonzero only on a three-dimensional hypersurface within the six-dimensional phase space. In other words, at each point in space there is a unique velocity at early times. Under these circumstances, the phase space distribution always remains three-dimensional. Singularities of the map from initial to final particle positions can arise; they are well known in other contexts as caustics and other catastrophes. As a result of these singularities, at a sufficiently fine scale the statistics of the cold dark matter density field are different from what is commonly assumed or measured in N-body simulations. This could have importance for direct detection experiments. We present special N-body simulations showing the formation and evolution of the caustics from initial conditions without special symmetries. We also comment on the possible significance of cold dark matter caustics for the staistics of strong gravitational lenses.
