Many of the accepted ideas regarding the structure and dynamics of the Milky Way are not supported by published observational data. The motion of the Sun relative to the Local Standard of Rest (LSR), the delineation of local spiral arms and even the number of arms, the motion of the Galaxy within the Local Group, and the nature of the Galactic bulge/bar all seem to be based upon incomplete samples or overlooked studies. Discussed here are results for each of the above based upon a new examination of available optical data.
