The method for determining the abundance of absorbing gas in the upper layer of a planetary atmosphere by means of analysis of the behaviour of the Stokes parameter (Q) along the absorption band is proposed. Results of polarization measurements in the 727 and 619-nm methane absorption bands are represented for the center of the Jovian disk. It is shown that the results correspond to the abundance of methane in the upper layer 44±9 m-amagat.
