The results of Gerdjikova and Shepherd (1987) are used to provide information about the variability of atomic oxygen concentrations at auroral latitudes. Reasonable assumptions are adopted concerning the nature of the additional excitation implied by the 40-percent discrepancy between the maximum values of the observed I(5577)/I(4278) ratios and the maximum value of the model calculations of Gerdjikova and Shepherd. It is shown that the O concentration does not often exceed the MSIS-83 value by more than a factor of 1.2 and that at times the value can be as low as 0.1 times that of MSIS-88.
