An outline of a method for calculating the principal and indirect portions of the planetary disturbing function is presented, based on the method of W.M. Smart (1960). The method is derived by truncating the Taylor expansion at the third power of eccentricity-inclination. In addition, a new method for obtaining the negative powers of the mutual distance between two planets is given, neglecting powers higher than the fourth in the eccentricity-inclination.
