Three simplified merger tree models for galaxy formation have been explored by Menou and collaborators [1, 2]. We have used these merger trees for a very preliminary investigation of what range of gravitational wave background levels at low frequencies might be expected from massive black hole binary coalescences after mergers of galaxies or pre-galactic structures. We find that the background produced probably does not substantially affect the LISA sensitivity at low frequencies, provided that mergers at z > 5 do not have a strong effect.
