In this paper, we move beyond the search for sources for gravitational waves and instead study gravitational wave detectors as an astronomical tool to study supernovae. With current and proposed gravitational wave detectors, core-collapse supernovae will likely only be detectable in the Galaxy. If such a Galactic supernova occurs, gravitational waves will provide a unique window into the rotation rate of stellar cores. Combined with neutrino emission, gravitational waves will also probe other collapse asymmetries and the hot equation of state for nuclear matter. All these prospects are discussed using intuition based on the latest set of 3-dimensional core-collapse simulations.
