The present state of knowledge about the moon is summarized by discussing the evolutionary stages through which the moon appears to have passed. Six stages are delineated: the origin of the moon, separation of the crust, early volcanism, bombardment by massive planetesimals, later volcanism, and a decline in activity leading to the present, apparently quiescent stage. Three possibilities are noted for the actual mechanics of the formation of the moon as the earth's natural satellite: intact capture, fission from the early earth, and capture of many small particles which accreted into a solid body while in orbit around the earth. Lunar rock types (mare basalt, KREEP, anorthositic) are described together with their respective formation processes and abundance. Properties of the lunar interior are considered.
