Saturn's moon Titan is cloaked in a global haze. The haze scatters light in Titan's stratosphere--most visible light from Titan comes from very high in its atmosphere. For the last decade, it has been known that Titan's surface is visible in several near-infrared "windows". Recently, HST/STIS observations were used to measure the tropospheric methane abundance. This proposal will take advantage of the capabilities of the HET/HRS to search for other atmospheric absorbers using a similar technique. The results will be the first systematic survey of Titan's troposphere for absorbers other than methane. At a minimum, this proposal will generate a set of testable hypotheses for the Cassini/Huygens mission to test. Only about 2 hours on each of two different nights are required.
