A general qualitative description is given of the solar system as a whole. The orbits of the planets are located in space, and a brief review is given of some satellite missions to the other planets. The physical parameters of the planets are tabulated, and satellite data are discussed which have been obtained on Venus, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter. It is noted that the solar system beyond Saturn is still almost completely unknown. The question of life elsewhere in the solar system is considered, and several alternative schemes of the planetary system are presented.
