The U.S. spacecraft Viking A began its journey to Mars on August 20, 1975. Details concerning the Viking project are discussed, taking into account the orbiter and the lander missions. Instruments carried by the orbiter include two TV cameras, a device for the detection of water, and a thermal scanning device. The measurements which are to be conducted during the passage of the lander through the Martian atmosphere are considered. Objectives for the spacecraft after the soft landing are related to the procurement of photographs, a search for biological organisms, an analysis of the material of the Martian surface, a study of the magnetic characteristics of this material, an investigation of the atmospheric composition, and the observation of atmospheric motion, pressure, temperature, and water content. A recording of seismic motions is also intended.
