The design of the Viking lander is described together with several experiments to be performed on Mars. The design description focuses on the lander's geometric structure, radioisotope thermoelectric generators, imaging cameras, and sampler assembly. The three biological experiments (pyrolytic release, labeled release, and gas exchange) are discussed in detail. Other investigations are briefly summarized, including the atmospheric sampling, X-ray fluorescence, meteorology, and seismometry experiments.
