Current theories of stellar evolution are compared to empirical data on the masses of stars in this galaxy. Stars can be classified into three groups: those with masses less than four solar masses (these give rise to planetary nebulas), those with masses between four and eight solar masses (these have degenerate carbon cores and may explode via different proposed mechanisms), and those with masses greater than eight solar masses. The last category explains many difficulties posed by theories on the intermediate category (4-8 solar masses). During the explosion of stars greater than 8 solar masses, heavy elements can be synthesized, cosmic radiation can be emitted, and pulsars can be formed.
