Theoretical considerations involved in the detection of gravitational waves are reviewed. The general-relativistic description of gravity is outlined, gravitational waves are analyzed in terms of Einstein's field equations, and the generation mechanism for such waves is examined. Equations are obtained for the energy flux carried by gravitational waves, and the interactions of such waves with a two-point-mass system and a cylindrical antenna are analyzed. Expressions are obtained for the thermal noise in a gravitational detector and the sensitivity of an antenna for such a detector. Limits on the detection of gravitational waves are considered, and the expected sensitivities of a Weber antenna are computed numerically. It is shown that such an antenna should be sensitive to gravitational waves generated in the formation of neutron stars.
