Two problems confront every model of lunar magnetism: (1) the magnitude of the stable natural remanent magnetization (NRM) carried by lunar samples; and (2) the presence of remanent fields on the lunar surface. A model is proposed whereby the moon would have acquired a remanent magnetization during its formation by accretion from planetesimals. Thermoremanent magnetization would be acquired by material heated above its Curie point during impacts and later cooled, and then shock magnetization would be acquired by material which was shocked but not significantly heated by the impacts.
