Galileo's discovery of the satellites of Jupiter in 1610 may be distantly traced in Marcel Proust's epic novel, In Search of Lost Time. Galilean principles of satellite observation for meridian astronomy were instituted in Paris, France in 1667. The Paris Meridian came to epitomize French scientific expertise for centuries, until its prestige waned in Proust's day. I will propose that, amidst Proust's diverse metaphors for "lost time", the demise of the Paris Meridian in 1922 is a subtle theme.
