Advanced multispectral and radar imaging techniques are now available for geologic remote sensing of the surface of the Earth, and will soon be available for Mars with the launch of Phobos in 1988 and Mars Observer in 1992. The studies of fresh Martian crater morphometry have provided valuable geologic insights into the cratering process and the role of gravity, target strength, and volatiles. In this investigation, the basis for future multispectral and perhaps radar remote sensing of the Martian cratering record is pursued through studies of the multispectral and radar signatures of terrestrial craters which are reasonable analogues to Martian varieties. The aim has been to establish the methodology for detecting the record of very fresh craters on Mars.
