Ions of refractory elements (Fe+, Si+ etc.)
detected in cometary comae by spacecraft may be generated due to
high-velocity impacts between cometary and zodiacal dust particles. Such
metallic ions in cometary comae may serve as indicators of
interplanetary dust clouds.
