X- And Gamma-Ray Telescopes And Instrumentation
Scientific paper
GRO will provide the opportunity to perform high sensitivity surveys of the galactic plane in the light of gamma ray lines. The two low-energy gamma ray telescopes OSSE and COMPTEL together will cover the entire nuclear spectroscopy range from about 100 keV to 10 MeV. Both instruments have an energy resolution of a few to about 10% FWHM, depending on energy. The collimated field-of-view of 3.8×11.4 degrees of OSSE together with its scanning capability, and the angular resolution of a few degrees within a 1 ster field-of-view in case of the imaging Compton telescope COMPTEL make these two instruments ideal for a first in depth- survey. Galactic gamma ray lines are expected from interstellar space as well as from discrete sources. The line-surveys will allow us to separate between these two components and to put the discussion on the origin of the line-emission on solid grounds. This will be especially true for the two so far most widely discussed gamma ray lines at 511 keV and 1.81 MeV. The present paper describes the capability and sensitivity of GRO for establishing such surveys.
