Neutron Stars, Gamma-Ray Sources, Gamma-Ray Bursts
Scientific paper
Because they are the most concrete evidence for a neutron star origin of γ-ray bursts, the existence of lines in γ-ray burst spectra has been widely debated. This controversy has overshadowed the importance of other characteristics of these observations which offer clues to the physical conditions which are present in the line producing region. This paper focusses on these line diagnostics by showing that HEAO-A4 observations of bursts on March 25, 1978 and June 8, 1978 impose strong constraints on the physical regions which produced the emission.
