An attempt is made to obtain an independent semitheoretical estimate of the actual mass, age, and luminosity distributions of stars in the giant region of the HR diagram. An analytical approximation for the mass spectrum of the field giants is derived using the initial luminosity function, the time dependence of the stellar birth rate, and the lifetimes of stars on the main sequence and in the giant region. The predicted mass spectrum is found to exhibit a very pronounced maximum for stars with masses slightly exceeding one solar mass and which were born on the main sequence in the first stages of star formation. The resulting space density is shown to be in close agreement with values deduced from star counts. The predicted magnitude distribution and the predicted position of the field giant branch in the HR diagram are found to agree well with results obtained by recalibrating the Mt. Wilson absolute magnitudes for giants and supergiants using the Wilson-Bappu effect.
