This is a brief review of the course theoretical gamma-ray astronomy has
taken over the past thirty years. An examination is given of what the
theoretical expectations were; to what extent they were realized; how
well they anticipated new directions of research; and alternatively, how
often were new directions unexpected.(AIP)
