Full-synthesis high-resolution (1 arcsec) observations of the classical double radio sources 0816 + 526 and 3C 388 are reported. The radio galaxies were observed at 4885 MHz using the Very Large Array with baselines ranging from 60 m to 18 km. Contour maps of the total intensity distribution reveal the presence of sharp leading edges indicative of deceleration in 0816 + 526, together with steep transverse boundaries of the two components consistent with constant emissivity-filled cylinders. 3C 388 is found to contain a bright radio jet embedded within the southwestern lobe, with a gap in the radio emission between the galactic nucleus and the jet. The structure of 0816 + 526 is attributed to the penetration of the radio source into an enhanced background density, while 3C 388 is interpreted as an interaction between an intermittent beam and/or fresh plasmoid and the boundaries of an evacuated cavity or bubble. In addition, observations clearly illustrate the variety of structures that may exist in radio galaxies classified simply as classical doubles.
