The effect of a galaxy-galaxy interaction on the dynamics of interstellar gas is investigated theoretically by means of numerical simulations. The unperturbed parent galaxy is modeled as a self-gravitating disk with a stabilizing halo and containing gas as an ensemble of cloud particles of negligible self-gravity; the perturbing galaxy is modeled as a point mass. The results are presented in extensive graphs and diagrams and characterized in detail. It is shown that the stellar bar formed in close encounters can induce gas infall into the nucleus if dissipation of gas energy via cloud-cloud collisions is efficient. This in turn depends on the initial configuration of the parent galaxy, in particular the distribution of gas.
