The study of meteoric phenomena is an ancient one. The long history of meteoric observations has led to a vast, almost folkloric, array of ideas and theories describing these transient night-time flashes. On rare occasions some meteors, particularly very bright ones, leave a brightly coloured train, which can sometimes on very rare occasions endure for up to an hour. These are truely "strange" phenomena among the meteors, and it is to these that the author turns. This article is, hence concerned with the historic observation and debate of these "strange", colourful and enduring apparitions.
