Theoretical speculations on the Oort cloud of comets surrounding the solar system are examined. Particular attention is given to the hypothesis that the Oort cloud is connected with the periodic extinctions of biological species on the earth. In addition, consideration is given to the hypothesis that the sun is a binary-star component whose companion is invisible, e.g., a black hole or a black dwarf.
