This thesis is divided into three, essentially self contained, parts. In the first part, the structure of classical 3-D space-times is examined. Here, what is known about the gravitational theories in these models is reviewed and extended. The nonexistence is investigated of a Newtonian limit to the relativistic theories showing that in the prescence of certain matter terms, Newtonian gravity can be obtained as a suitable weak field limit. A number of new, exact static and nonstatic solutions are presented to the equations of 3-D general relativity with scalar field and perfect fluid sources. The second part contains a study of certain cosmological models which have self-interacting scalar fields obeying an exponential potential. The techniques of phase portrait analysis are used to study the N-dimensional cosmological models as well as some anisotropic models. The last section is a review of the cosmic string picture of galaxy formation. The structure of the string is examined from the viewpoint of the fields.
