It is demonstrated that an observational selection effect may be responsible for the constancy of the magnetic flux per unit area of the stellar surface, proposed by Gray (1985). The main-sequence stars of earliest spectral type for which the magnetic field was determined from Zeeman broadening of spectral lines are the fastest rotators, while the average period of rotation decreases toward later spectral type. As a result, the total flux divided by the area of typical dwarfs does not change from star to star, in a good agreement with predictions of the dynamo theory. It is also shown that total observed magnetic flux correlates well with the Rossby number.
