Multichannel spectrophotometer observations of four extreme subdwarf M stars are presented: LHS 453, LHS 3382, G7-17, and LHS 489. They are characterized as having all molecular features weak, but Ca I 4227 anomalously strong. A classification-dispersion SIT spectrogram of LHS 3382 exhibits the Na D lines in normal strength. The behavior of the spectral features can be understood from the interplay of ionization and molecular dissociation equilibria with the greater gas and electron pressures in abnormally transparent atmospheres. In comparison with other low-metal-abundance sdM stars, these few objects have extreme metal deficiency, such as are found in extreme sdG stars, and are subluminous for their color.
