The first observations have been made with the 4.2-metre William
Herschel Telescope at the international Observatorio del Roque de los
Muchachos. Eventually, the telescope will be equipped with a range of
versatile instruments enabling it to observe planets, stars and the most
distant galaxies known, just as Herschel did.
