Features, origins, and methods of measuring and interpreting UV radiation detected from celestial objects are described. The clearest viewing of UV radiation takes place outside the earth's atmosphere, where the International UV Explorer has taken more than 30,000 UV photographs since 1978. The IUE, a joint NASA, ESA, and British project carries two spectrographs which scan the recorded spectral lines of observed objects and events for transmission to earth receiving stations. Scanning takes place in high or low resolution bands, yielding echelle spectra which serve to identify the chemical nature of elements under view. The instruments have served to locate hot stars and help determine the composition of interstellar clouds and gases.
