It has been suggested by Maciel and Pottasch (1980) that there may be systematic errors associated with the distances provided by Milne and Aller (1975) for those planetary nebulae which are optically thick in the Lyman continuum. The mechanism involved is that if the nebula is very dense then all the Lyman continuum radiation from the exciting star will be absorbed within a small radius, leaving a neutral shell outside. The ionized mass will then be less than the constant value adopted by Milne and Aller. An improved method for determining the distances to the considered planetary nebulae is discussed. A catalog of distances for 360 nebulae based on the improved method is to be published later. Preprints are available upon request to the author. It is pointed out that the objections raised by Maciel and Pottasch to the original Milne-Aller distances are no longer relevant to this catalog.
