Simultaneous spectroscopic and photometric observations of the nonsynchronous rotator H2252-035 are presented and interpreted in terms of two models that have been proposed for the system. Photometric observations show the presence of pulsations having a 859-sec period with a semiamplitude of 0.026 mag and a slower variation of the mean light level with a period of 3.59 hr and a semiamplitude of 0.05 mag. There is now evidence, however, of the 805-sec X-ray period. An orbital velocity of 60 km/s is estimated for the primary on the basis of the motion of the double peak structure. The emission lines H-beta, H-gamma, and He II 4086 show variations in line strength, although none of the correlations is with the X-ray period. It is concluded that H2252-035 can be interpreted as an asynchronous AM Herculis type binary containing a magnetic white dwarf, although the possibility that the compact object is a higher field neutron star cannot be excluded.
