Scientific paper

The paper describes a method for determining the distribution of the Joule heat production rate and other important electrodynamic parameters in the ionosphere over the entire polar region with a time resolution of several minutes primarily from ground-based magnetometer data. Advantages and limitations of the application of the ground magnetic records are examined with reference to the assumptions involved in the numerical algorithms as compared with more direct radar and satellite methods. It is demonstrated that the highest rate of Joule heating does not always occur in the midnight sector; rather, there are spatially and temporally separated regions of the main source of Joule heating.
