Radio telescope antenna design and fabrication must keep pace with the angular resolution requirements of operating frequencies now reaching into the mm-wave and sub-mm-wave ranges. Carbon fiber-reinforced mm-wave antenna dishes have recently been constructed to achieve 50-micron accuracies. Site selection for such telescopes is directed toward high elevations and dry climates. At the shortest wavelengths in question, maser amplifiers yield the lowest noise temperatures, in some cases approaching quantum noise limits. The maximization of interferometric baselines calls for the conduct of future radio astronomy aboard orbital platforms.
