A review is given of the scientific significance of submillimetre observations for a wide range of astrophysical problems. The papers presented at the workshop are reviewed in the context of the major research areas which can be addressed by these types of observation. It is shown how these range through essentially the whole of modern astrophysics. Various thoughts about the way in which the subject will develop and how the new facilities will be run are presented.
